Why is ground mount solar more expensive? Apr 29, 2024
Ground-mounted solar installations can often be more expensive than rooftop installations due to several factors:

1. Site Preparation: Pv ground mounting systems require more extensive site preparation compared to rooftop installations. This may include clearing vegetation, leveling the ground, and possibly even pouring concrete foundations for the mounting structures.

2. Mounting Structures: Ground mounting systems require additional mounting structures to hold the solar panels in place securely. These structures are typically made of metal and can add to the overall cost of the system.

3. Solar Racking and Foundations: Depending on the terrain and soil conditions, ground-mounted systems may require more robust solar brackets and foundation systems to ensure stability and durability over time. This can increase both material and labor costs.

4. Wiring and Cabling: Ground-mounted systems often require longer runs of wiring and cabling to connect the solar panels to the inverters and electrical grid infrastructure. Longer wiring runs can increase material costs and may require more labor for installation.

5. Land Costs: In some cases, the cost of acquiring or leasing the land for a ground-mounted solar installation can be significant, especially in areas where land prices are high or where land use regulations impose restrictions or additional costs.

6. Accessibility: Ground mounted pv system may require more extensive access roads or pathways for construction vehicles and maintenance personnel, especially if the site is located in a remote or difficult-to-reach area. This can add to the overall cost of the project.

Despite these factors, ground-mounted solar installations can also offer certain advantages over rooftop installations, such as the ability to optimize the orientation and tilt of the solar panels for maximum energy production, as well as the potential for larger-scale installations with higher overall capacity. Additionally, ground mounted systems may be preferred in cases where the roof structure is not suitable for solar panels or where there are shading issues on the rooftop.
